Obituary of James Randolph Elliott

J Randolph Elliott July 22, 1923 - June 22, 2015 Randy was born in Los Angeles, California on July 22, 1923. He graduated from Webb School of California, Claremont, in 1941 and matriculated at Princeton University as a Freshman. In 1942, Randy enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was classified as Cryptographer and trained at Pawling, New York and Chanute Field, Illinois. He was assigned to Signal Corps and stationed at Headquarters, Ferrying Division, Air Transport Command, Cincinnati, Ohio. He then was appointed Warrant Officer. He requested overseas service when computerized cryptology eliminated the need for detached Signal Corps units, and was transferred to USAF, and re-assigned to Tezgaon-Kurmitola Air Base in Assam Valley, India, where he served as Base Adjutant until the base closed in 1946. He was Honorably discharged at Fort MacArthur in 1946. Randy graduated from Stanford University (1948) and Stanford Law School (1951). He then joined Pacific Lighting Corp's non-utility subsidiary as Associate Counsel, moved up through management to Corporate Secretary of parent holding company and resigned in 1967, joining California Portland Cement Co. as VP and General Counsel. In 1973, he was named President and CEO of Statex Petroleum, a public (Amex) oil and gas exploration company principally in California, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas. Randy was a member of California State Bar when he retired in 1983. Randy, and his beautiful wife, Janis Hornby, moved To Carmel in 1986. Randy served on the Monterey County Grand Jury, the Boards of Carmel Heritage, and Chartwell School and became a Director and President of Carmel Public Library Foundation. His activities and hobbies included playing duffer golf with the world's shortest backswing, occasionally cursing his computer and relaxing several months a year on Maui. A loving Father of five children and eight grandchildren, his memorial service with military honors will be held on Wednesday July 1st at 12:30 pm at Mission Memorial Park and Seaside Funeral Home, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.
