Obituary of Richard Custer Earl

Richard Custer Earl, a long-time resident of Pebble Beach and Carmel, CA, died Jan. 28, 2018, at the age of 100 after a brief illness. He was born in 1917 in Herkimer, NY, the son of Marion Turner and Corlis Earl. He married his wife Nathalie ("Lee") in 1960, who predeceased him in 1974. Mr. Earl attended Syracuse University and served on active duty with the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He attained the rank of Captain and was noted to be a man of "mature demeanor, personal refinement and sober habit". He had a long and distinguished career with The Travelers insurance company beginning in 1941. Upon his retirement in 1982 he held the position of Vice President of the Western Region. Following retirement, he moved to Pebble Beach. He was an avid golfer, world traveler, and served as an Ambassador on Royal Cruise Lines. He was a volunteer for the Central Coast Hospice driving patients to doctor visits. He is survived by a daughter Christine Earl of northern California; stepson Craig Leutzinger (Janet) of Lawrenceville, GA; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four favorite cousins, Roxanne K. Kelley of National City, CA; Bonnie Bryans of Cazenovia, NY; Tonja Curry of Morris, CT; and Sara Gault of Litchfield, CT. Mr. Earl wished to have his ashes scattered over the ocean and not to have a memorial service.
