Obituary of Eva M. Hlasny

Eva Hlasny, a resident of the Monterey Peninsula for 58 years, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 17, 2017. She is survived by her sons Peter and Tom (daughter-in-law Kim and grandson Tyler) as well as family in the Czech Republic. Born in Kremnica, Czechoslovakia, Eva graduated from Charles University in Prague with a degree in Creative Education and Fine Arts and taught High School mathematics in the cities of Tisovec and Zvolen. She arrived to America on August 14, 1959 and was married August 22 at San Carlos Cathedral to the love of her life, Karel Hlasny, whom she met as a wounded soldier in the Slovak National Uprising during World War II. Together with her husband she worked at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey for 20 years teaching her native Czech language. After her retirement from teaching she devoted more time to painting. Eva loved the beauty of the Monterey Peninsula, which became her inspiration and canvas for many of her paintings that were often displayed at the Carmel Foundation of which she was an active member their Crafty Ladies knitting group. Eva was most happy spending time with family and friends especially during the holidays. She was an accomplished cook, creating classic Czech specialties and especially enjoyed baking, often creating a 1000 varied cookies during Christmas. She was a dedicated parishioner at San Carlos Cathedral and shared time with friends at the Carmel Foundation and with her DLI Retirees group. A Mass and celebration of her life will take place Saturday, September 23 at San Carlos Cathedral in Monterey at 11 am.
