Obituary of Angelina Rosalie Bruno

Angie Bruno died peacefully at Cypress Ridge Care Center surrounded by family. She was born 96 years ago in Pittsburg, CA. and due to fishing her family moved to Monterey about 1926. She had 4 sisters and 7 brothers. At age 16 she had to quit school to go to work in the canneries where her job was to take the livers from mackerel and to pack sardines. A siren would sound when the boats arrived with fish which meant it was time to go to work. Many times this was in the middle of the night so she and the other cannery workers would walk down to Cannery Row. Angie did this for about 20 years. After the sardines were gone she went to work in retail for 18 years and then for another 16 years at the family business, finally retiring at age 69. Angie met the love of her life at 19 when Vince Bruno was fishing with her father and brothers. They were married at San Carlos Cathedral in 1939 and were married for 67 years when Vince passed away at the age of 95 in 2006. They shared an amazing love story. This love and commitment was always apparent. At their house there were always roses in bud vases that Vince had given Angie along with a love note. Angie loved to gamble, so for over 20 years she organized two bus trips a year to Reno or Las Vegas. Those that were lucky enough to have been on one of her trips know that the bus trip was as fun as the destination because of the food and activities she planned. She also loved to play poker and had a Friday night poker group for over 40 years. Although she no longer played weekly she was still playing occasionally. Another passion was her Catholic religion and she didn't miss a Sunday Mass until recently. Angie was also a member of the Italian Catholic Federation, Festa Italia, and the Ladies Bocce Club. She was also an avid S.F. Giants fan and watched every game during which she would call her sons or sister to put in her two cents on the coaching. She also followed every golf tournament! Another love was for her parakeets and she taught many of them to talk! One in particular had a vocabulary of over 50 words! Angie cherished her family both past and present. She loved family gatherings and spoke often of her families many holiday parties in the basement of her parent's home on Van Buren Street. The home movies of those times are priceless! On Angie's birthday what number were you? She would get many phone calls on her birthday so she started logging them with the time of your call and when you called she would tell you what number you were. This lead to a family contest to call first without waking her up! Angie is survived by her two sons Peter (Carol) and Jan (Theresa) and 6 grandsons: Mike (Maria) of Monterey, Matt (Kelly) of Monterey, Peter, Jr. (Stephanie) of Pacific Grove, Vince of Las Vegas, John (Christina) of Missouri and Christopher of Missouri and 9 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson due in March. Surviving brothers are Sal Riso of Monterey and Paul Riso (Cynthia) of Los Banos. Her surviving sister Jennie Riso was her best friend and helped her in many, many ways! The family would like to thank Dr. Jeffrey Mace of Freedom, her cardiologist of 18 years, for giving us all those extra years with her. Also the wonderful caregivers and staff at Cypress Ridge. She wasn't there long but your kindness and caring are deeply appreciated. Visitation will be Thursday, October 1 from 6-7 pm at Mission Mortuary with the Vigil starting at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday October 2, at 9:30 am at San Carlos Cathedral. Interment to follow at San Carlos Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Italian Catholic Federation #36, c/o 1319 Funston Ave., Pacific Grove, CA 93950 or a gift to a charity of your choice .
