Obituary of Toshio C. Nakajima

Monterey, CA Toshio Clifford Nakajima, 89, a longtime Monterey resident, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 after a long illness. Born in San Francisco, CA on October 7, 1925, he was the son of Kichiro and Miyo Nakajima, both from Japan, and the brother of the late Reverend K. Arnold Nakajima. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years Nancy (Takahashi), brother Michio (Mae), and sister-in-law Yemi. Clifford attended schools in San Francisco, Berkeley, Topaz Relocation Center, Salt Lake City, and graduated in 1949 from the University of California at Berkeley School of Optometry. In 1952 he opened his optometry practice in Monterey. Dr. Nakajima retired in 1996 and the practice continues to be run by his son, Dr. Grant Nakajima. Active in his community and church, Clifford was a member and past trustee of El Estero Presbyterian Church. He was a past member of Monterey's Rotary Club International, Lion's Club, and the Japanese American Citizens League. Clifford enjoyed spending time at home and occasional Hawaii vacations with Nancy and their three sons. He is survived by sons Steven (Carrie), Scott (Lori), and Grant (Alice) and six granddaughters of whom he was very proud. The family wishes to thank the Visiting Nurse Association, Central Coast Senior Services, Hospice, and Park Lane for their care-giving during Clifford's illness. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the El Estero Presbyterian Church, Monterey, CA.
