Obituary of Minoru Okumura
Minoru was born and raised in Monterey. During World War II, he and his family were relocated to the Poston II Relocation Center in Arizona. After the war, his family returned to Monterey where he later graduated from Monterey Union High School in 1949. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and served proudly for 20 years before his retirement in 1971. After retirement from the Air Force, he moved back to the Monterey Peninsula and made his home in Seaside. He then embarked on a twenty year career with the United States Postal Service in Salinas before his retirement in 1991. He spent his retirement years watching his grandchildren grow, listening to his wife sing karaoke and taking long walks on the bike path along the bay.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Masako, son Michael (Lana Yee), daughters Sharon (Benjamin Tolentino) and Karen (Willie Wong) and 6 grandchildren: Eric and Gregory Tolentino, Leland and Allison Wong and Victoria and Brandon Okumura. He is also survived by his sister Mitzi Kamimori and brother Mark Okumura.
He was affectionately known as "Jughead" by his family and friends and will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 am on Friday March 20 at Mission Mortuary, 450 Camino El Estero, Monterey and followed by a committal at the Monterey City Cemetery with full Military Honors.
