To the Andersons "Far and Wide",
I just learned of your mother's funereal today and I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to send flowers. I hope this note will give me a small chance to honor her life both as my mother-in-law for ten years and the grandmother of Miles and Quinn.
I could not have asked for a better mother in law (and father in law too?_). I liked your Mom instantly and felt very comfortable in her home with her garden, the calla lilies, the cats, and Venus in the back yard. Sylvia was sweet but she also had an "edge" and I appreciated that juxtaposition in her character. She had a unique way of looking at things that I really enjoyed. I have a special memory of her willingness to drive with me to Aromas, a small town near Santa Cruz, to get an herbalist by the name of "Rose Buffalo" to make me an herbal wreath for my wedding. We had Miles in a car as a small infant. In the midst of our drive it began to rain furiously, and we were not really sure where we were going. Sylvia took it all in stride and, as a result we were both able to enjoy our " mini-adventure". I thought "Wow, she's really cool!".
There were many enjoyable times and great memories of my time with Syliva and Doc. Too many to mention. I found them to be very supportive and always ready to help. When Miles was born and John and I returned to our apartment, clueless,( with a baby!), Sylvia and John arrived that day with a chicken, a steak, and a case of Snapple lemonade! I was so grateful! And I was so glad to share in the happiness of a new addition to the family. Since I didn't have my parents there yet, the fact that they were able to come up and help, and the fact that they were so similar to my parents was a great comfort to me.
The other word that comes to mind when describing Sylvia is "plucky". Despite her disability she always seemed up for an adventure and I really admired that. She had a formidable resilience! Even though we hadn't been close in recent times, I always missed her and will continue to miss her still. My condolences to you all,
Dee
