I was so sorry to hear of Ron's passing. He was a talented, wonderful, kind, generous soul and my family and I were fortunate to know him. I want to reach out to Howard or other family to see if it would be possible to do a museum exhibition of some of his original work. As Education Director at the Fresno Art Museum, I create and curate an exhibition every year in one of our galleries. The exhibition must have a strong appeal to both children and adults. Ron's work would be perfect. And it would be a privilege to share his work with others. Thank you.

Ron was the nicest, most generous, and most talented man I've ever spoken with. He did a Wizard of Oz painting for a book that I wrote with the "Munchkin Coroner" (Meinhardt Raabe) from the film and Ron loved that fact it was for an actual actor in the film and was exacting and perfecting in every detail. A truly cherished painting. Ron left too soon, I am very saddened by his passing still. With lots of love, Daniel Kinske, West Hollywood, CA

We met only once and spent the afternoon talking about art and painting. But that one encounter had a huge impact on me. I can't put a brush to illustration board without thinking about you and all of the wonderful work that you have done. I was just about to package up some artwork to show you and I found out about your passing. I'm sorry that I had not written sooner.

I only recently found out about Ron's passing & wanted to reach out to send you my deepest & most heartfelt condolences. Ron was a very special person in my life as a child, and I will miss him greatly while remembering him lovingly. Remember when you both lived above us at 6611? Dearest Ron,
Thank you for touching my soul during the several very meaningful conversations we shared. My heart feels a bit broken... more than a bit. I have the books that you were going to do sketches in, (that were going to be used at a fundraiser for a children's non-profit), sitting on a bookshelf. Why do I think we always have forever?
Our conversations ... the inspiration and tender-hearted thoughts you shared with me ... those things will stay forever in my heart. I believe your beautiful, shining soul will continue on forever. As will, (OF COURSE), your incredibly beautiful work...
Still, lesson learned. My heart is broken. I needed to act on the beautiful sentiments and thoughts you offered... more quickly. Lesson learned. (Another thing your sweet soul taught me.)
I love you Ron. What a sweet, talented, (astonishingly so),, generous artist and human being you are... soul you forever will be. Help me from above, will you?
All of my love,
with a broken heart,
Laura Heeney

Dearest Howard,
I am so sorry to hear of Ron's passing. Nineteen years ago I had the honor of befriending one of the greatest mentors I have ever had and for that matter will ever have. If not for Ron, I am confident that starting my career in animation would have been vastly more difficult than what it was. I was all of twenty when he invited me to visit Disney and allowed me the opportunity to learn from him. His sage advice, gentle critiques, and warm personality gave me the courage and confidence to pursue my dream of becoming an animation artist. I will never forget the afternoon standing in Ron's studio in the home the two of you shared on Verdugo when Ron asked if he could keep a copy of some of my animal drawings. Ron Dias, my mentor, liked my drawings so much that he wanted copies. I still beam with pride. My first week at Disney I made sure to call Ron and sure enough, he was so absolutely happy for me. Seventeen years later, I am still with Disney thanks in large part to Ron and the big bear hugs I could always count on. He will be greatly missed.
Sincerely,

His talent and love of animation was evident by his extraordinary resume.' The animation and art world will miss him greatly, not only for his amazing talent but for the generous and giving person that he was. I first met Ron while working on a 3D animated short film in college. The film was directed by an old professor of mine, Todd Kesterson, who had been a long time friend of Ron's and had asked him to help out with designing the characters and enviroments for the film. I was at the University of Oregon at the time and hoping to break into the animation industry upon graduating. Ron immediately impressed me with his talent and knowledge of animation. But more so than all his skill, I was amazed at how compassionate and caring he was toward the students. Ron was always willing to help anyone who dreamed of working in the industry that he had spent so many years in. After I graduated, my job search wasn't going well and I found it very hard to even get an interview. One day, I called Ron out of the blue, not really expecting he would even asnwer the phone. He not only asnwered my call, but he graciously gave a lot of his time giving advice, encouraging me and telling me to keep at it. Hard work and perseverance paid off and I eventually landed my first job. I look back at what Ron has accomplished throughout his career and how humble and giving he was to me and my fellow students. For an artist of his stature, he was so willing to give back to the community. He knew that this art form is one to be passed on and shared. And he did so willingly and generously, and that is what I will remeber him most for.

My cousin Ron was always a role model for my brother Gene and me. Growing up on Oahu with Ron and his sister Yvonne was quite a special time for us. His mother, Evie (my mom, Elsie's, sister) was our favorite aunt - his father, Lino, our favorite uncle. Ron and Yvonne were like another brother and sister to us. We all grew up in Hawaii together, but eventually off we all went to Southern California to pursue our own careers. Ron flourished in the animation/entertainment industry. Ron and I went off on our separate ways, but always kept connected.
I (we) will truly miss Ron's unending warmth, his selfless generosity (always sending wonderful pieces of art to our kids, Jason and Aimee, on their birthdays) and certainly his great vocal imitation of Mr. Magoo. The animation industry, and indeed; the world will miss his gigantic talent. As each of his colleagues would testify, he always invested 150% of his energy and creativity in each and every project he accepted.
My wife Andrea and I, Jason and Aimee send our love and deepest condolences to Howard - who has been at Ron's side for many, many years. And certainly to Steven and Greg and their families. Be strong.
Ron will live on in our hearts.
Until we meet again, Ronnie.

I was extremely saddened when I learned of Ron's passing. I had the privilege of working with Ron twice during our careers in animation. First, at Hanna-Barbera during the 1966-67 TV production season, and second, during the production of The Secret of NIMH and other Don Bluth projects in the early 80's. When we first met at H&B he was painting spectacular underwater backgrounds for the Moby Dick series. I was a trainee inbetween artist but professionally interested in all phases of animation art and studio operations. Ron was working late into the evening under quite a bit of pressure. Even so, he allowed me to stand beside him in his cubical, evening after evening, and observe his techniques and approach for producing those wonderful backgrounds. It was an exceptional learning experience. He was very generous with his time and enthusiastically explained his artistic methods while maintaining and injecting his unique upbeat sense of humor for which he will always be remembered by all of us. Ron and I remained in contact, and years later, during NIMH, I was the production manager and director of special processes when Ron joined the team. As well as many other backgrounds, he produced the very passionate vermillion and yellow backgrounds for the sequences where Mrs. Brisby Meets Jeremy the Crow and Dragon the Cat, as well as, Mrs. Brisby's sunset flight through the evening clouds clinging to Jeremy's back to visit the Great Owl. Ron has stated that NIMH was his favourite project and, again, he brought a professionalism and jovial attitude to the team which is sometimes uncommon under pressure to produce demanding results. He was an exceptionally versatile artist and authentic human being.
Life is all too short and Ron left us all too soon.
I send my heartfelt condolences to Howard, Ron's entire family, his colleagues, friends, and fans.
Aloha, Ron, My Friend.

Ron was one of the good guys. He was a major part of a great team put together for The Secret of NIMH in early 1980. He was always good natured and ready to take on the day. Humble, out-going and friendly, available to offer advice to the younger artists. He was open, honest and generous. He could take a joke and respond in kind. We enjoyed four busy years with him working on NIMH, Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp and the development of East of the Sun: West of the Moon. Having talked to him in the hospital just a week before he passed away, and noticing how bad he was, it was still a shock to hear about his passing.
I'm very glad that he and Howard were able to get married just last month. My condolences to him and the rest of the family.
Ron will always be remembered through his art and the wonderful person that he was.

Ron was a great Mentor to the Animation Major at Brigham Young University. He helped numerous students, as they went through school, to gain the skills necessary to make it into the industry. We are going to miss him a lot. He was such a great friend.
Condolences and best wishes to Howard and the rest of his family.

Ron was truly special; a lovely humble man with a tremendous gift. I feel lucky to have known him as a friend. He and Howard attended my solo appearance with the Monterey Symphony and then he asked me (!) for an autograph. His art hangs in my house, and he will always be in my heart.

Ron is a very good friend. We met 20 years ago at Disneyland, during one of his artist signing events, at the Disney Gallery. We have grown to be very good friends. I will miss him greatly.

Ron was a lovely, gentle man—a true gentleman in every sense— and a wonderful artist. We were colleagues at Disney, and my husband Howard and I are grateful to have known him. Paula Sigman Lowery
