Michael is loved and survived by his partner of 24 years, Johnathan King Smith.
Michael and Johnathan met in Monterey in 1999, exchanged rings in Hawaii in January 2000 and registered as domestic partners in California in June 2019.

Dr. Friedman was a well-respected leader and healthcare manager within the State of California Department of Corrections.
In 1994, he was recruited to serve as Chief Medical Officer at Wasco State Prison until 1995, when his experience and leadership was requested to activate the new level IV Salinas Valley State Prison in Salinas, California in 1995 and serve as Chief Medical Officer until 1999.
Dr. Friedman served as Chief Medical Officer at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, California from 1999 until his retirement working for the State of California in 2007.

Michael’s mother, Irene was a native of New York.
His father, Samuel immigrated to the United States from Kiev, Ukraine with his grandparents in the 1920s and was Chief Dentist and Medical Director at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Lt. Colonel Michael Friedman was active duty in the U.S. Army Medical Corps 13 years and served in the Persian Gulf War in Desert Storm / Desert Shield before retiring in 1992.
For his service, he was awarded: the National Defense Service Medal, the Southwest Asia Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons and an Army Lapel Button.
