Walter Muckelberg

Obituary of Walter Muckelberg

Walter was born in Bremerhaven, Germany. He told us stories of his childhood, and all about his hometown. He never lost his love for his home country. H described it in so much detail, you could actually see it in your mind while he was telling his stories. Walter left Germany at age 24 and headed to the United States. Beginning his life in his new country, in upstate New York. In 1962, Walter joined the Army, where he would spend the next 20 years defending his new country, traveling the world, and girl watching across the planet. Walter loved the ladies. He was a cook and supply specialist, receiving many commendations for best mess. Spending time with Walter, you knew how much this time in the Army meant to him. Many of us were lucky enough to hear some amazing stories about his time in the Army. Sometimes he would laugh so hard telling the stories, that we were never quite sure how the story ended, but we knew it was good. In 1980, Walter was stationed at Fort Ord, and when he retired two years later in 1982, he never left. He made Marina his home, until the day he left us to move on to that great mess kitchen in the sky. Walter would then dedicate his time to being a steadfast volunteer for the VFW in Marina. His Sunday morning breakfasts were legendary. Walter loved Marina, and he loved his second home, English Ales Brewery. Over the last 20 years, Walter made himself a beloved figure at the pub. Everyone knew him. Everyone knew which seat was his. Regulars loved to chat with him, and visitors always asked about him on their next trip in, even if they’d only met him once. He was larger than life, and that at under 5 feet tall, no one had a bigger heart. He will always be one of the most loved patrons of all time, he was family. When he passed, a gathering was held at the pub, to say goodbye. And in a true testament to this man, it was standing room only. Walter did not have family here, so we were his family, and people showed up in full force to say goodbye to the man we all loved. We miss you, Walter - you will always be in our hearts
