Herbert Wheeler

Obituary of Herbert Hoover Wheeler

Herbert Wheeler passed away peacefully at home on May 10, 2020, with his wife Janet by his side, surrounded by family that loved him.

Herb was born on June 2, 1932, in Taylorsville Mississippi to John and Hannah Wheeler. Upon graduation from Jones County High School, he enlisted in the United States Army. During his military career, Herb had many tours to various countries and was a veteran of the Vietnam war. He was a member of Old Palestine Church, and during his visits home he would always attend services there. His last duty station was Fort Ord, CA where he retired in 1973, serving in the U.S. Army for 20 years. After his service in the military, he worked at AAFES in Fort Ord, CA, retiring in 1992. He later opened a restaurant H&J’s Southern Fried Fish in Marina, CA. While stationed at Fort Ord, he met his future wife Janet, and began to build a life together which lasted for 50 years.

Herb was a kind, fun-loving person with a warm and gentle heart. He was known for his generous ways and was always there for anyone that needed his help. He loved entertaining family and friends from near and far and was a devote Raiders fan. He enjoyed fishing, fixing cars, and listening to blues music, but most of all he loved vacationing with his wife Janet, driving his RV across the country to visit his family, going on cruises, traveling to different places, having fun and enjoying life.

Herb suffered a major health crisis that left him disabled for the remainder of his life. Even during his illness, he was his jovial self and was always happy to have visits from family and friends. His wife Janet, her mom Fusako, and family took good care of him until the end of his life. Herb was an amazing, loving person and will be truly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Hannah Wheeler, brothers Jeff, Joe, David and Robert Earl, and sisters Alberta, Roberta and Willmetta.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Janet, sisters, Illinois (James) Keyes, and Shirley Gullatte, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, and friends.

Herb’s family wishes to extend their heart-felt gratitude to Mr. Joe Crawford and Mr. Richard Wilsdon for all the help they provided throughout the years. To Dr. Norman Gross, Dr. Jeffrey Chen, Dr. Michael Hendrick, Hospice of Central Coast, nurses and caregivers, words cannot express my appreciation for the excellent care you provided to my husband for the last 26 years.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Mission Memorial Chapel on Thursday, May 28th. Graveside service and interment are scheduled for Friday, May 29th at 2:00 p.m. at Mission Mortuary & Memorial Park.
