Obituary of Judson Weil

Judson (Judd) Weil, age 96, died April 24, 2014 at his home in Carmel, one day shy of his 97th birthday. He was born on April 25, 1917 in Milwaukee, WI, son of Rose and Irwin Weil. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Sally Rothenberg Weil and is survived by his family Deborah Stern and her husband Peter of Carmel and Marjorie Stone and her husband James of Needham, MA; grandchildren Sarah Stern-Benoit and husband Colin of San Francisco, Katherine Stern and husband Mark Brady of Santa Cruz, Elizabeth Stone and husband Andrew Ellsworth of San Francisco and Andrew Stone and wife Mallory Carlson of London, England. He was recently blessed with the birth of great grandchildren Mena Sally and Eli Scott Brady of Santa Cruz. Judd attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison and then moved with his family to Santa Monica, CA. It was there he met his life partner Sally whom he married in 1944 while stationed in Liberal, Kansas where he served during World War II in the US Army Air Force. Upon returning to Los Angeles, Judd began his career in the furniture industry which lasted close to 50 years. In 1964, he moved his family to San Francisco where he became the Northern California Manufacturer's Representative for Bassett Furniture Industries and founded the Weil Distribution Company. Judd and Sally loved visiting the Monterey Peninsula and began their part-time residence in 1973, moving to Carmel full-time in 1994. They travelled extensively, visiting practically every continent in the World, played bridge weekly at the Carmel Foundation and Judd also enjoyed the weekly bridge game with his men's group at Del Mesa. He was an active member of the Stillwater Nine Hole Golf Group, joining his son-in-law Peter for golf and luncheon events and bringing home the trophy for the longest putt at the age of 93! Judd was an avid San Francisco Giants fan watching every game on television when he was no longer able to travel to the ballpark. His passion was his family; his kindness and generosity were unrivaled and his sense of humor legendary. He will be missed by his family and his many friends. The family is grateful for the loving care this past year provided by his devoted caregiver, Glenn Howard. A service of remembrance will be held at Congregation Beth Israel in Carmel Valley on Friday, May 2nd at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Carmel Foundation or charity of your choice.
