Obituary of Amalia Elsa Kohatsu

Amalia Elsa Kohatsu, age 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Marina after a brief illness on January 15th, 2018. Born in Hünfeld, Germany on May 13th 1924, her family moved to Berlin after her father's accidental death while working for Deutsche Bahn AG. She survived allied bombings and the Russian invasion of Berlin during World War II. After the Berlin Airlift, she escaped East Germany and resettled in Southern Germany with her sister, Rosa. It was here she met her life-long love, Rinji, who was stationed at a nearby garrison, and they married in 1954. She became an Army wife raising three children and worked most of her life as a child care service provider at various military bases. The family was stationed in England, Arizona, Hawaii, Germany, Texas and Fort Ord before settling in Marina in 1973. During her retirement, she loved to travel, exploring the spa towns of the Czech Republic and Germany. She went on numerous trips to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Southern California and Portland. She loved ballroom dancing and won several trophies for her skills. She was an active member of the Sally Griffin Senior Center in Pacific Grove for 17 years, and was a lifelong member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the V.F.W. She is survived by her three children Michael Kohatsu, James Kohatsu and Evelyn Kohatsu (Dale Utley), five grandchildren, Daniel (Marisol Kohatsu), Aimee, Janielle (Michael Tice), Andrew and Matthew, and three great grandchildren, Caleb, Audrey and Bohdi. Her surviving German relatives are her sister Elfreide Grabowski and nephew Peter Grabowski. She was preceded in death by her husband Master Sgt. Rinji F. Kohatsu, parents, Joseph Kasper Malkmus and Anna Agnes Malkmus, siblings Magnus and Alfons Malkmus and Rosa Kibodeux. A viewing will be held on Saturday, January 27th, 2018, beginning at 11:00 am, at Seaside Funeral Home, 1915 Ord Grove Avenue, Seaside, CA, 93955, with Funeral Services to follow at 1:00 pm. Military Graveside Services will be held at a later date, where she will be laid to rest with her husband, Master Sgt. Rinji F. Kohatsu at the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery, 2900 Parker Flats Road, Seaside, CA 93955. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Meals on Wheels, 700 Jewel Ave., Pacific Grove, CA, 93950.
