Obituary of June M. Cogswell

Monterey- June M. Cogswell died July 28, 2013. Born in Washington, D.C., she graduated from what was then Wilson Teachers College, which is now part of the District of Columbia. Later she took graduate credits at George Washington University and at the University of Indiana. After teaching a year in the D.C. public schools system, she joined the Navy and was commissioned at Midshipmen School at Smith College in Massachusetts. She served in Navy activities in Baltimore, Norfolk, and D.C. Reporting to the Navy General Line School in Monterey, she was the first WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) to serve on the staff. During her tour of duty, the Naval Postgraduate School moved to Monterey. Her last active duty was in D.C. as Administrative Aide to the Chief of Naval Research. After release from active duty she participated in the Naval Reserve, retiring as Captain. Also she worked for the Navy under Civil Service. Upon retirement she settled in Monterey, building her home on the hilltop lot she had purchased while stationed here. Captain Cogswell was or had been a member of: Alliance on Aging (volunteer of the Year 1989), American Association of University Women, Big Sur Land Trust, Friends of Hidden Valley, Friends of the Sea Otter, Gentrain Society of MPC, Land Watch, Military Officer's Association (Life Member), Monterey Library League, Old Monterey Preservation Society, Pt. Lobos National History Association, State Theatre Preservation Group (Charter Member), YMCA, (Dr. Iona Logie Volunteer award 1987). Captain Cogswell is survived by her niece Christine Cogswell of Fort Wayne, IN; nephew Neal Cogswell of Silver Spring, MD and his daughters, her grandnieces, Allison and Michele Cogswell; grandniece Pamela Cogswell of Jacksonville, FL. It was Captain Cogswell's expressed wish that any memorial contribution be to the Alliance on Aging, the American Cancer Society of Monterey, or the Alzheimer Association on El Dorado in Monterey.
