Marian Ryter

Obituary of Marian Ryter

Marian Ryter, loving mother and grandmother, dedicated wife, and devoted friend, died yesterday at age 95. She was born in 1915 to Sophie Levenson and Mark Rosen. She had a younger sister, Lauriette, who died in 1923 at the age of five. Marian wed in 1935 to Myron Ryter who preceded her in death. She leaves two sons, Stephen(Wendie) and Mark(Rosetta), and three grandchildren, Loren(Deirdre), Tzaporah, and Eden(Aaron). Her congenial good humor, compassion, and keen intelligence will be missed by all who were part of her diverse circle. She spent all but the last decade of her life in the Boston area. Here she pursued with passionate conviction the great interests of her life, predominently classical music, arts, culture, and current events. In 1999, at the age of 84, she moved across the country to Monterey, CA, where she was rejuvenated with wonderful new friends and experiences. Marian was a soft spoken and forthright conversationalist. Her knowledge of historic twentieth century events, policies, and personalities was extensive. Accepted to the Juilliard School of Music in 1931, she will be remembered as a gifted pianist who stirred audiences for decades by her emotional range at the keyboard. Intellectual curiosity was a driving force in her long and satisfying life. Marian was an avid reader and a proud lifelong supporter of the arts. A graveside service will be held Friday, October 29th at 1:00 p.m. at Gan Hazikaron at Mission Memorial Park, 1915 Ord Grove Ave, Seaside. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to The Monterey Public Library Bookmobile, 625 Pacific St., Monterey, CA 93940 or to the Public Broadcasting Service at www.pbs.org.
