Obituary of Maria Adriaantje van der Wal

Maria Adriaantje van der Wal (nee Sturrus), 94, of Carmel, died Thursday April 26, 2018 at Westland House surrounded by her children and grandchildren.A native of The Netherlands, Mrs. van der Wal was born February 14, 1924. She and her husband owned Zuider Zaadhandel in Rotterdam, founded in 1926, until 1955 when they emigrated to the United States. They settled in Los Gatos where they owned and operated van der Wal Draperies until they moved to Monterey in 1988. She moved to Del Mesa Carmel in 1997.Mrs. van der Wal is survived by two sons, Cor van der Wal (Barbara) of Menlo Park and Peter van der Wal (Leslie) of Westlake Village, three grandchildren, Corey (Jessica), Louis and Lia, brother Henk Sturrus (Miep) of San Jose, sisters Jeanne Matthijsse of Barendrecht, The Netherlands, Nel Verhey (Wim) of Lincoln, Ton van der Wilt (Leo) of Ridderkerk, The Netherlands, 13 nieces and nephews, and countless wonderful friends.Private family services will be held. Mission Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Carmel Foundation, a place where seniors gather and enjoy a variety of activities in an environment of respect and camaraderie, 8th and Lincoln Ave., P.O.
