Obituary of Frances Solis

Frances Solis passed away peacefully on December 9, 2017, in Prescott, Arizona. She was 97 years old and the youngest of eight children. She was born in Monterey on September 14, 1920, to Mariano and Ida Archdeacon. Her parents were early settlers of Monterey, arriving in 1910. Her father immigrated from Reposto, Sicily to Astoria, Oregon and her mother immigrated from Piedmonte, Italy, to Astoria, Oregon. Frances graduated from Monterey High School in 1938, and after High School, she was employed at F.W. Woolworth's for several years. At the beginning of WWII, she was hired by the Monterey Herald as a switchboard operator. Her duties included accepting classified advertisements and stock quotes in shorthand and transcribing them for publication. A few months later she was promoted to be in charge of all Herald subscriptions, including subscriptions sent to the Armed Forces in Europe and the South Pacific. She was also the Accountant for that department. At the end of the war in 1945 she married Sam Solis. Sam served with great distinction, having received the Silver and Bronze stars for heroic action in the Battle of the Bulge and the Roer River crossing in Belgium. Frances and Sam had two children, Rosanna and Sammy. Frances belonged to the Italian Catholic Federation and was a charter member of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. where Sam's name is placed. Frances was considered to be an excellent cook, and for the Bing Crosby golf tournaments, now the AT&T, she prepared dinners in Pebble Beach at parties given by movie stars and business executives. Frances enjoyed taking many cruises with her husband, and later with her family. Among her other favorite past-times were her trips to Reno on "Angies" bus with her friends, and trips to Las Vegas with her daughter, most recently to celebrate her 97th birthday. And she was a life-long Giants and Forty-niners fan, even when she moved to Arizona. During all family gatherings. Frances said these inspiring words to live by "Yesterday is but a memory, Tomorrow is an uncharted course, So live today, So that tomorrow will be a memory without remorse". Frances is survived by her daughter, Rosanna Matthews (Chuck) of Prescott Valley, Arizona. She is also survived by two step-grandsons, four great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Frances was blessed to have many loving and caring nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Sammy and husband Sam as well as five sisters and two brothers. A viewing will be held at Mission Mortuary on Monday, December 18th from 4-6:30 p.m. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will be begin at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 19th, at 10:00 a.m. in the Santa Rosalia Chapel at the San Carlos Cemetery.
