Obituary of Teresa Calcagno

Teresa Calcagno, 93, of Carmel, passed away peacefully Monday, September 18, 2017. Teresa was born in Modesto on Jan 27,1924 to Northern Italian immigrants Louis Ottone and Emilia Carano Ottone and shortly thereafter the family moved to Salinas . Raised with three competitive brothers, she quickly learned to compete in sports which carried through in later life, playing tennis until her early 80's. She also enjoyed watching sports especially baseball and tennis. Her true passion in life was providing for her children and husband. She cherished the opportunity she had to stay at home and be a homemaker. She also enjoyed her arts and craft, in particular, making hand stitched Christmas stockings for every family member. But she was never more happy than being in the kitchen preparing a meal for her family or friends or anyone that unexpectedly stopped by the house. Teresa was introduced to John Calcagno at a wedding of mutual friends After a short courtship they were married in Salinas on June 22,1947, and were inseparable during their 70 year marriage. Besides her parents, Teresa was preceded in death by her two brothers John and Louis and their wives Barbara and Jo and nephew David Lerda. Survivors include her children Cindy (Paul) Riso,Robert(Lori Merwin), Richard(Liz),Charles(MaryLou), Maria (Richard) Etheredge,and Joseph(Julie), brother Charles Ottone and sister Dorothy Lerda. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandson and numerous nephews and nieces. A very devoted Catholic , Teresa generously supported her Church and community. She was a member of the Altar Society and a CHOMP volunteer for many years. Funeral services will be held at the Carmel Mission Basilica on Friday . Sept. 29, beginning with a viewing at 9:00am followed by a mass at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Meals On Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula. Mom you devoted your life to your family, you can now walk into your heavenly Father's arms. Until we meet again, We Love You
