Obituary of James Harvey Hellam

im Hellam, 67, passed away April 30, 2014 at Kaiser Santa Clara Hospital in California from complications of mesothelioma. He was born November 28, 1946 in Monterey, California, to Monty Hellam and Mary Ellen Arnold. Jim is survived by his father, Monty; sisters, Cynthia (Rocco), Julie and Sandra and brother, Mark. He is also survived by his two sons from former wife, Patti - Jon and Aaron (Lisa); daughters from former wife, Kathy - Shannon and Jamie (Matt); and grandchildren, Brayden, Brodrick and Colton. Additionally he is survived by his nieces, Mellissa, Laura, Marianne and Jennifer and nephews, Matthew, Jeremy, Orion, Rigel and Sam. Lastly, his beloved and devoted dog, Lexi, survives him. Jim graduated from Monterey High School with the class of 1964. Following graduation he went to San Jose State University where he studied criminal justice. With his BA from SJSU in 1969, Jim joined the San Jose Police Department. One of the youngest to make sergeant at SJPD at the age of 25, Jim worked undercover in vice squad. Despite his success, Jim left the force before retirement to pursue a career in motivational speaking and seminar trainings. It was as a motivational speaker that Jim traveled the world, empowering people to achieve their goals while enriching their lives. Jim was a senior softball world champion and hall of famer. When not playing softball his favorite activities included boating and waterskiing at Clearlake, coaching his children and grandchildren in baseball and football, and above all, spending quality time with his family and the ones he loved. The funeral service is at 11:00am on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Mission Mortuary in Monterey. The burial will follow at City of Monterey Cementerio El Encinal at noon with food and reception after. There will be an additional memorial service at New Era Training facility in Concord, CA on June 14, 2014 at noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jim's memory to: UCSF Medical Center Oncology Research for Mesothelioma at P.O. Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145-0339, Attn: Thierry Jahan, MD and David Jablons, MD. Also, donations are welcomed at San Jose Police Activities League or your local SPCA.
