Obituary of Alan Dean Miyamoto

Alan Dean Miyamoto, age 60, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 after a determined battle against pancreatic cancer. He was born on July15, 1953 to Hoshito (Oyster) and Otsune (Oski) Miyamoto in Carmel, CA. As the youngest of three children, Alan was little brother to sisters Carole and Diane, and had fond childhood memories with his cousins, especially Timmy, Joey, and Bobby. He was a graduate of Monterey High School and was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, including taking a trip to Japan for the 1971 World Scout Jamboree. He met his wife, Esther, while attending Chico State University, graduating with degrees in Parks and Recreation and Psychology. Alan and Esther were married in 1980, and they welcomed their son, Cory, in 1988. Alan was passionate about his career in recreation and the outdoors with 28 years of service to Monterey County Parks, where he earned his way up from Park Ranger to Operations Manager. He concluded his professional tenure as Operations Manager for the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District, where he retired in the end of 2011 after dedicating himself to trail building and helping to open Palo Corona Regional Park to the public. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and fierce friend. He enjoyed fly-fishing, barbecuing, and capturing memories on film. He never missed a chance to video a halftime show while his son was in the Cal Band, and was always in search of the latest hot fly to reel in the big one. Alan was also an avid Giants fan, and had the opportunity to attend both the 2010 and 2012 World Series in San Francisco. Alan is survived by his wife, Esther of Salinas, CA; his son, Cory of Walnut Creek, CA; his sisters, Carole of El Monte, CA and Diane of Seaside, CA; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and favored lapdog, Ariel (Daddy's Girl). His family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all those who have helped to enrich his life along the way, the caregivers and staff of Pacific Cancer Care of Salinas, CA, Westland House of Monterey, CA, and Hospice of the Central Coast, and for the years of devoted friendship from work colleagues and fishing companions.
